Let there be a world famous Hungarian contemporary artist!

Given the small size and the isolated state of the Hungarian art scene and market, even the possibilities of one single artist are limited, unless they don’t start looking for a place for themselves considering international contexts. And if they do this, they’ll soon realize that the presence of Hungarian art – especially the contemporary kind – is so marginal, as if it would not exist at all. This is so in spite of the fact that artists in our country are not more in need of talent than representants of other, more successful nations. This phenomenon has given place to debates in professional circles for decades: the actors of the profession (artists, curators, theoreticians, maecenas’, leaders of institutions, etc). are pointing fingers at each other in a seemingly endless chain.
Being fine artists, with this project we are trying to establish a connection between the Hungarian and the international scene, and, symbolically, also between these factions, in order to make a step forward. Within the framework of the project we are visiting foreign cultural institutions and involve them in different actions. One of these actions is to send them a black flag wearing our slogan as our present and ask them to fly it on their institution and photograph it for us.
Aside from similar actions, materialized works of art that textually carry the „Let there be a world famous Hungarian contemporary artist!” slogan either in their title or on their surface also belong to the project.
The first piece, made in 2010, was a wooden silhouette of Hungary, of the size of 2x1,5m, covered in tinsel, that made it into the collection of the Dunaújváros Institute of Contemporary Art. This was followed by the public reading of the manifesto called „What a world famous Hungarian contemporary artist should be like” at the Artfair event of Műcsarnok art hall. In 2011 more works of art were created, among them a golden baton, carrying our slogan, which we presented to the director in charge of the Tallinn Hungarian Institute. After waving our Estonian-Hungarian language printed flag at the main square of the city, we flew it on the Institute during the course of our exhibition. The French-Hungarian version of this flag was sent to the Paris Hungarian Institute, and in 2011, the Delhi Hungarian Center for Information and Culture, was sent the English-Hungarian version.

Az FKSE tagjainak fimjeiből is válógató, Experiments with the Magyars: Associations of Identity across Geographies című, 2012. január 24-én, Indiában nyíló kiállításhoz kapcsolódóan küldtünk egy angol-magyar zászlót a Delhii Magyar Tájékoztatási és Kulturális Központnak. A magyar képzőművészeti szcéna és piac kis mérete és elszigetelt volta miatt egy alkotó lehetőségei is korlátozottak, hacsak nem kezd el nemzetközi összefüggésekben gondolkozva teret keresni magának. Ha pedig ezt elkezdi, hamar be kell látnia, hogy a nemzetközi mezőnyben a magyar képzőművészet -és főleg a kortárs- jelenléte annyira csekély, mintha nem is létezne. Mindez annak ellenére van így, hogy országunk művészei nem szűkölködnek jobban tehetségben, mint az ebben sikeresebb, más nemzetek képviselői. Ez a jelenség több évtizede képez vitát szakmai körökben: a szakma szereplői (alkotók, kurátorok, teoretikusok, mecénások, intézményvezetők stb.) mutogatnak egymásra soha véget nem érni látszó láncolatban.
Képzőművészként próbálunk a projekttel ezen táborok, illetve a magyar és külföldi szcéna között szimbolikusan kapcsolatot teremteni az előremozdulás érdekében. Ennek keretében felkeressük a külföldi-magyar kulturális intézeteket és bevonjuk őket különböző akciókba. Egyike ezeknek, amikor azt kérjük tőlük, hogy a számukra eljuttatott ajándékunkat -ami egy a szlogenünket magán viselő, fekete zászló- tűzzék ki intézményükre és fotózzák le nekünk.
Ilyen és ehhez hasonló akciókon kívül tartoznak még a projekthez tárgyiasult képzőművészeti alkotások is, melyeknél a címükben, vagy a felületükön, mint reklámhordozón jelenik meg textuálisan a "Világhírű Kortárs Magyar Képzőművészt!" szlogen.
Az első, 2010-ben készített darab egy 2x1,5 m-es fa alapon, aranyfüsttel borított Magyarország sziluett volt, ami a dunaújvárosi Kortárs Művészeti Intézet gyüjteményébe került. Ezt követte a "Milyen legyen a világhírű kortárs magyar képzőművész?" című manifesztum felolvasása a Műcsarnok Artfair elnevezésű rendezvényén, Budapesten. 2011-ben további műalkotások készültek, többek között egy a szlogenünket magán hordozó, arany színű stafétabot, melyet a mindenkori Tallinni Magyar Intézet igazgatójának ajándékoztunk. Miután meglengettük a város főterén az észt-magyar szövegezésű zászlónkat, ki is tűztük az intézményre, amig a kiállításunk tartott. Ennek a zászlónak a francia-magyar változatát juttattuk el a Párizsi Magyar Intézet részére, 2012-ben pedig a Delhii Magyar Tájékoztatási és Kulturális Központ kapott egyet, angol-magyar nyelven. Ezúton is köszönjük az intézmények befogadó és együttműködő szándékát!
